These Are Your Instructions is a growing website about Instruction Art that brings together several styles of creative instruction from various arts disciplines to explore the aesthetics and politics of rules, codes, and interactivity. I hope to somehow open up whle at the same time define this interesting, but under-exposed field.
Instructions (and our responses to them) are present in nearly every moment of our waking day. The focus of this website will be on the use of instruction in art and as art, yet will also delve into the political, social and philosophical aspects of instruction. Material of interest includes scores, scripts, guides, notations, recipes, maps, demands, to-do lists, and other variations that define instruction art.
This website includes writings about instruction, instruction-based works, and my thesis The Art of Instruction, among other helpful material.
This is only one of several instruction-based art projects that have developed in the past decade. The purpose of this website is to act as a link to other projects and writings about the topic of instruction art, but also to feature historical and contemporary artists who have used instruction as an integral part of their work.
